REVIEW: The Penguin on 4k UHD + Unpackaging
The popular HBO/Max series arrives onto the 4k UHD format for the first time ever!
Warner continues to deliver with their pristine 4k UHD releases and this time we got The Penguin. A series that landed Colin Farrell a Golden Globes nomination where he thanked Caroline from Crafty in his acceptance speech!
The Penguin is DC’s version of “The Sopranos”, but darker and more edgier. I figured with the ratings success of the series there would be a 4k physical media version to follow, because Warner Bros. as a studio has been really good in putting their top performing episodic programming onto the 4k UHD format!
To be very honest with you, this is one of the best looking 4k transfer has ever put out for a tv show or a movie! You get all 3 episodes spread across 3 BD-66 discs. Though, the quality outshines its streaming version so well I thought they were BD-100 discs!
With this release, we’re treated to the “Double Dolby” treatment.
To start with Picture, the Dolby Vison/HDR’s colors pop in each episode. This show is a dark series taking place often at night or in low lit areas, but man, when that HDR kicks in - its a true treat and festive to the eyes. The black levels are excellent and facial details and clothing textures are pristine. Background objects you can see so well you could touch them! I thought “The Last of Us” was the best - in my opinion - this tops that 10-fold!
The Dolby Atmos tracks on each episode go hard and are so well balanced with dialogue, score and action combined that I never find myself having to adjust my levels or settings. You could hear every detail big and small, but well balanced. That’s all we ask for especially on a series like “The Penguin” which can go from quiet to loud in a second.
Each disc contains various bonus features (outlined on the back of the packaging).
