Review: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow on 4k UHD
Shout Select delivers this Paramount Sci-fi Noir title onto 4k UHD for the first time ever!
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow is a Sci-Fi/Noir film from the early 2000’s. The film has built quite a cult following of the years and fans have been asking for a 4k of this film for years and Shout Select has delivered on this release.
Sky Captain was the first ever film to be film on all blue screen backgrounds - the film was shot digitally using the same Sony camera that George Lucas used on the Star Wars prequels. A 35MM Digital Negative was made off of the digital export of the film as DCPs were not a thing back in 2004 when it was originally release. Paramount and Shout restored the film to true 4k UHD with Dolby Vision (HDR-10 Compatible).

Visual
The last time I watched Sky Captain was on DVD and then streaming in HD. This 4k transfer offers a dramatic leap over both. The picture has a soft filmic look to it and reminiscent of a film out of the 1930’s which was the Director had always intended it to look like. The 4k enhances the facial and wardrobe details while highlighting the overall sepia tone the film has throughout. The Dolby Vision/HDR is where it truly shines bringing out a much brighter image especially in darker sequences.
Audio
Included is the original DTS 5.1 surround track that sounds absolutely incredible! The war scenes have so much spatial detail - this track truly brings you into the film. The dialogue is crisp sound - it’s truly a 10/10 mix! There’s also 2 commentaries included on the 4k UHD disc under “Set-Up” that go into further detail with the Director and others on how the film was made.
Bonus:
Audio Commentary With Director Kerry Conran, Production Designer Kevin Conran, Animation Director Steve Yamamoto, And Visual Effects Supervisor Darin Hollings
