Review: DROP on 4k UHD
As promised here’s my late night hot take on “Drop” on 4k UHD.
The film streets June 10th and can be ordered from GRUV directly by clicking here.
This transfer featuring Double Doubly (Dolby Vision + Atmos) with HDR is true treat!
While the film itself looks very sharp and crisp with fine detail inside of the film’s very practical set sequences. The moment the film opens to exploding real-life glass (as explained in the Director’s commentary track) - the detail here is very crisp. It’s when we get to the city shots that are of a combo of Dublin and Chicago and meant to ultimately look like Chicago in real life. The nighttime city light sequences look very nice with great detail to the sparkling lights in the city and the street lights shining down below. Incredible detail one might not notice. This film takes place mostly at night uses Director Christopher Landon’s nighttime warm lighting interior methods very well and this is where HDR truly shines. Creating an immaculate and crisp picture effect.
I will point out this the first Landon-direct film not to do something to the Universal logo - though he did take the Uni theme song and in place put score to set the tone of the movie.
Speaking of score and the audio mix in Dolby Atmos! Wow. 10/10 here - dialogue is crisp and when the action/horror elements presents the track pack its punch here. Even when it’s soft and just the memes whipping across the screen - the mix sounds very well done and mirrors the Dolby Atmos I experienced when it was first released in theaters and I would say the same for the Dolby Vision picture as well.
If you want to get a feel for how the film will look and sound watch it on a Dolby Cinema then you’ll get a vibe for the physical transfer for later on.
Hats off to Universal for actually releasing this Blumhouse film on 4k UHD and not waiting a year to license it or release separately - making us double dip 🤣
I highly recommend this 4k UHD transfer on its BD-66 disc! All Bonus Featured can be enjoyed on the 4k disc in addition to the included Blu-ray.
