Lionsgate brings Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. to 4K Ultra HD in a beautiful presentation complete with Dolby Vision/HDR and Dolby Atmos.
This delightful, sincere family film is a welcome addition to the format—and proof that the market for 4K releases extends far beyond horror, action and thrillers.
Adapted from Judy Blume’s beloved novel, the film follows 11-year-old Margaret Simon as she moves to a new town and begins navigating friendships, family, faith and the uncertainties of growing up. The film approaches these subjects with warmth, humor and honesty, never talking down to its younger characters or audience. Abby Ryder Fortson is wonderful as Margaret, while Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates bring tremendous heart to the story.
The 4K presentation is absolutely stunning. Dolby Vision gives the image a rich, natural appearance that perfectly complements the film’s nostalgic 1970s setting. Colors are warm and inviting, with clothing, household décor and outdoor environments all benefiting from the expanded color range. Flesh tones remain natural, black levels are strong, and fine detail is consistently impressive. Facial features, fabrics and production design display a noticeable level of clarity without making the image appear artificially sharpened.
This is not a film built around visual spectacle, but that makes the strength of the transfer even more apparent. The added resolution and refined HDR presentation allow its carefully constructed period details and gentle cinematography to shine. The result is a wonderfully filmic image that feels polished while retaining the warmth and softness appropriate for the story.
The Dolby Atmos soundtrack is understandably restrained. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. is primarily a dialogue-heavy film, and the most important element of the mix is handled exceptionally well. Dialogue is crisp, clear and consistently intelligible, remaining firmly anchored to the center channel. Music and environmental sounds provide a pleasant sense of space, while the surround and overhead channels are used subtly to enhance the atmosphere rather than overwhelm the story.
Lionsgate deserves credit for giving this film a premium physical-media release. Too often, 4K Ultra HD is treated as a format reserved for genre films and large-scale blockbusters. Family films, comedies and character-driven dramas can benefit just as much from superior resolution, richer color and lossless audio.
Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. is a charming, thoughtful and beautifully acted film that looks exceptional on 4K Ultra HD. Lionsgate’s release demonstrates that audiences want more than explosions and scares in their 4K collections. More family films deserve this level of care, and hopefully this release helps open the door for many more.
