This is the kind of disc that reminds you why physical media still matters and 4k transfers on discs matter even more, especially for comedies!!

Video quality headlines epically here here. The new Dolby Vision/HDR grading brings out fine detail and a really pleasing, warm color palette that fits the movie perfectly. Then when the film jumps into those “click” moments and future sequences, the colors pop hard in the best way. You’re also getting a noticeable bump in clarity: hair and makeup details are more defined, and clothing textures look bold and tactile.

It’s clean, crisp, and just feels properly “4K” from scene to scene.

Audio is the other big win. The brand-new Dolby Atmos mix is epic for a comedy, and it’s mixed with real care. Dialogue stays locked and clear, the score has room to breathe, and the surround effects are used beautifully without ever getting distracting. Cold Storage on 4k UHD came as quite a surprise to me as the title didn’t have strong box office, but again it’s Liam Neeson at the help with Joe from strange endings so the marketing wanting a 4k — chances are pretty high.

Now, to a different distributor MGM - if Cold Storage (not your movie) can get a 4k means that The Sheep’s Detective gets a 4k UD release!

I distinctly recall watching the title I’m reviewing today “Crimson’s Peak” at the local Cinemark back in the day. I think I saw it in XD. Back then, we didn’t have imax where I’m from in Pittsburgh and so I believe it to be XD I saw it in at the Cinemark, yes, they do have the best chain theater popcorn and I stop in a local Cinemark just for their popcorn. 244oz of unhealthy poppy corn makes me so happy!!! :?

I remember watching it on the bring screen and falling in love with it -a gothic romance / a haunting fairytale in which the house plays just as much a main character as its cast. A production design that would only immaculately shine more with Dolby Vision / HDR bringing out the flushing vibrant red colors like a fashion statement!

The picture is crisp throughout and even the darkest of scenes are made to shine crisp as crisp with its use of Dolby Vision/HDR.

The audio is its original DTS: X mix which nicely balances dialogue as the early part of the movie is more still and quiet, but as it builds its mixed delightfully, you can feel the creaminess of the Crimson Peak house - you can feel is you’re there.

Anybody else save the HDR stickers from Arrow releases?! The 4k / HDR stickers sure do look sexy!

Fun fact, the film released a film novelization at the time of the film’s original theatrical release and provided a lot of background narrative and story that added context and now watching the film beautifully ties together.

The fact that arrow got this makes me so happy. They truly gave this film the love and care it deserves. GDT approved the transfer.

This is a film that can be watched at all hours and when you put it on you’re transported into that era of time. The continues and production design all benefiting significantly from this 5m 4k Vision / HDR transfer.

Kattan and I are planning to watching this one together - he’s enjoying Deep Blue Sea 4k (surprise! A movie he turned down - you’ll be able to watch the clip next week!). He was offered the role as the chef by the director himself. More on that story on a bonus episode of Peeps!

Flip it over and you get the kids of Derry rendered in a cinematic, near-photographic poster style that rivals anything you would find hanging in a theater lobby. Open the case and you are greeted by blood-red discs, which is exactly the kind of thematic attention to detail that makes collectors fall in love with physical media all over again. I opted for the Steelbook edition, and it also comes with approximately five index-card-sized illustrated collectors’ poster cards that “welcome you to the town of Derry,” clearly inspired by the show’s opening title sequence. The artwork on these cards is detailed and genuinely lovely. They arrive tucked inside their own protective envelope, the front of which reads: HBO Original and then Welcome to Derry Also included inside the case is an inset booklet whose front features the original series poster art, and whose back serves as a complete disc and episode guide — episode names, synopses, and a full breakdown of bonus features across all three discs are all right there, cleanly laid out and easy to reference. It is a true visual and festive treat — the kind of bonus material that actually earns its place in the box rather than feeling like an afterthought.

All eight Season 1 episodes are spread thoughtfully across the three discs: Disc 1 carries Episodes 1 through 3, Disc 2 picks up with Episodes 4 through 6, and Disc 3 closes the season with Episodes 7 and 8. Each disc also includes its own Extended: Inside Derry featurette accompanying the episodes on that respective disc, so the bonus content is organically tied to the story beats you have just watched rather than dumped onto a single extras disc and forgotten. The set does not feel crammed or compromised. Everything has room to breathe.

Now, to the part that matters most: the presentation. The 4K Dolby Vision and HDR10 transfer is, in a word, phenomenal. This is the kind of transfer that makes you rethink how you experienced the show on streaming entirely. Much like what the 4K disc releases did for the IT Chapter One and Chapter Two films, Welcome to Derry arrives here looking immaculately sharp and deeply atmospheric. The clarity is striking — shadow detail, skin tones, the damp and rotting texture of Derry itself — all of it rendered with the kind of precision that streaming simply cannot replicate. In the same conversation as the Last of Us Season 1 and Fallout Season 1 4K transfers — two of the finest television transfers in recent memory — this set competes at that exact level, and depending on your setup, it may just edge them out.

But the audio is what truly floored me. The Dolby Atmos tracks included here are a pure delight. It is worth noting that the Welcome to Derry score is substantial — practically four full volumes of score have been released commercially, and this is a show that leans heavily and beautifully on its music. On streaming, that immersive, layered audio gets compressed and flattened. On disc, the Atmos track is unlocked and fully realized. Every action sequence, every horror beat, every quiet crunch of tension hits with a physical presence that streaming just cannot touch. The low end is felt. The surround channels are engaged. This is exactly what a home theater setup was built for.

Yes, the Steelbook may be difficult to find in stock right now — it took some hunting. But between the Pennywise and Derry Kids artwork, the blood-red discs, the illustrated collector cards in their protective envelope, the inset episode guide booklet, and one of the best 4K Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos transfers a television series has ever received, this is a set that is absolutely worth the chase! 100% Perfect Release, I have no flaws!

When news broke that Diane Keaton had passed away, I found myself doing what a lot of us do when we lose someone whose work meant something to us — I went to the shelf. There’s something about physical media that turns into a kind of ritual when you’re processing loss. You pull the disc, you put it in, and you spend two hours with someone who isn’t there anymore. It doesn’t fix anything, but it matters.

So when it was announced that Something’s Gotta Give is finally — finally — getting its first-ever Blu-ray release, my reaction was equal parts genuine excitement and something that felt a little heavier than that. The timing is bittersweet in a way that probably only makes sense if you grew up watching Diane Keaton movies and understood exactly how rare it was to see someone her age, in a film like this, holding the whole thing together the way she does.

This one has been missing from Blu-ray for too long, and it’s overdue. Now that it’s here, it’s hard not to feel like we’re getting it at exactly the right moment.

The Film

Something’s Gotta Give came out in 2003 and has stuck around in the cultural memory in a way that most romantic comedies from that era simply haven’t. Nancy Meyers wrote and directed it, and it has all the hallmarks of her work — beautiful interiors, people in actual houses that feel lived-in, characters who talk to each other like adults — but it also has something underneath the surface warmth that gives it more staying power than its genre reputation might suggest.

The premise is deceptively simple. Harry Sanborn (Jack Nicholson) is a man in his sixties who has spent his entire adult life dating women half his age. He’s charming, self-satisfied, and completely unprepared for what happens when a romantic weekend at his girlfriend Marin’s (Amanda Peet) Hamptons beach house goes sideways. Harry has a cardiac episode and winds up stuck there, being reluctantly nursed back to health by Marin’s mother, Erica Barry (Keaton) — a successful, divorced New York playwright who has absolutely no interest in being charmed by him.

Of course, things develop. Keanu Reeves shows up as Harry’s thirty-something cardiologist, who turns out to be far more attentive to Erica than Harry ever expected, which forces Harry to reckon with the fact that for the first time in his life, he might actually be in competition for someone he wants.

What makes the film work is how much the two leads commit to it. Nicholson is doing something genuinely vulnerable here — Harry is often ridiculous, and Nicholson plays that without vanity. But the film really lives or dies on Keaton, and she delivers one of the most honest performances of her career. There’s a scene — many of you know the one — where Erica is sitting alone at her desk writing, and she just starts crying. Not pretty crying. Real crying. Full, unguarded grief at her own situation, her loneliness, her complicated feelings. It’s the kind of scene that usually only lands if the actress makes you forget the camera is there. Keaton makes you completely forget the camera is there.

Meyers surrounds all of this with the kind of production design that makes her films feel like comfort viewing without ever crossing into saccharine. The Hamptons house is one of the great movie locations of that decade. The film earns its warmth because the characters earn their happiness — and they do it the hard way.

The Blu-ray Presentation

This is the first time Something’s Gotta Give has been released on Blu-ray anywhere, and it arrives on a BD-50 disc, which means plenty of space for a proper encode. The film is presented in its original 1.85:1 theatrical aspect ratio, which is exactly right — this is a film that was shot to breathe, with wide interiors and open coastline, and it needs the full frame.

Audio is DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, which suits the material well. This isn’t a film designed to test your subwoofer, but a lossless track means you’re getting the dialogue, the score, and all of Meyers’ carefully chosen music cues in full fidelity. That matters on a film where so much of the emotional work is being done by a conversation happening across a kitchen island.

The jump from DVD to Blu-ray on a catalog title like this can be dramatic when the encode is handled properly, and this release has had the format waiting patiently for it since 2003. BD-50 gives the transfer room to work, and for a film that looks the way this one does — all that warm coastal light, all that white linen and natural texture — this is the kind of upgrade that should look genuinely excellent on a good display.

What Is Laff-A-Lympics?

If you have never seen the show — or if the decades have softened the memory a bit — here is the setup. Laff-A-Lympics premiered on ABC on September 10, 1977, as part of a massive Saturday morning block that also included The Scooby-Doo/Dynomutt Hour. The three teams are the Scooby Doobies, led by Scooby-Doo himself and filled out with characters like Dynomutt, Scooby-Dum, and Yabba-Doo; the Yogi Yahooeys

, captained by Yogi Bear and featuring a roster that includes Huckleberry Hound, Wally Gator, Snagglepuss, and Auggie Doggie; and the Really Rottens, a team of comedic villains who spend most of their screen time cheating, scheming, and still managing to lose. Each episode covers two separate events staged in two different locations, giving the show a globe-trotting variety feel that kept things fresh week to week.

The premise is deceptively simple, but what made it work was the sheer volume of personality crammed into every episode. This was a showcase for the entire Hanna-Barbera catalog, and there is real joy in watching Huckleberry Hound competing in the Three-Legged Kilt Race in Scotland or seeing Wally Gator navigate the Fill Up the Oasis Race in the Sahara. Disc 5 — Bring It On: Fight to the Finish (2009)

Things take a slight turn back upward here. Fight to the Finish is on a BD-50 and comes with DTS-HD Master Audio plus a Dolby Digital 2.0 track as a secondary option.

The return of DTS-HD is a pleasant surprise after three discs of straight Dolby Digital. The lossless track means the audio presentation here is on par with the first film in terms of quality, even if the source material is a later direct-to-video production. Having the Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo option alongside it is a thoughtful inclusion. This disc is noticeably better equipped than discs two through four.

Disc 6 — Bring It On: Worldwide #Cheersmack (2017)

Worldwide #Cheersmack is one of the more recent entries in the franchise and it gets a solid audio package. BD-50 disc, DTS-HD Master Audio as the primary track, and a Dolby Digital 2.0 stereo track for secondary use.

The same setup as disc five. Lossless DTS-HD audio and the stereo fallback make this one of the better-sounding discs in the set for anyone with a full surround system. The fact that three of the seven films in this collection carry a lossless track is worth noting — it shows at least some care went into the audio mastering decisions for the set rather than treating every entry the same.

Disc 7 — Bring It On: Cheer or Die (2022)

The most recent entry in the franchise is the lone BD-25 single-layer disc in the set. It carries a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track.

The BD-25 format is a bit of a flag if you’re paying close attention. Single-layer discs have less capacity than the BD-50 format used across the other six discs, which can affect how much room is available for the video encode alongside the audio. On the audio side, the DTS-HD MA 5.1 lossless track is a good sign — you’re getting quality audio on the newest film in the franchise. But the reduced disc capacity compared to the rest of the set is worth knowing going in. For a 2022 production, a BD-50 would have been the more generous choice.

If you’re a fan of the franchise — or if you have someone in your household who is — this set is a reasonable buy. Getting all seven films in one physical package with consistent Blu-ray presentation is convenient, and the first film specifically gets the audio treatment it deserves with DTS-HD MA 5.1 on a BD-50.

For dedicated home theater listeners who care about every disc being at its best, just know going in that the audio quality is uneven across the set and the first film is clearly the star of the show in more ways than one.

It’s a propulsive, visually ambitious ride — the kind of movie that rewards a home theater setup built for it. The story follows a group of competitive gamers navigating a high-stakes underground tournament where the line between the game and reality starts to collapse. It’s kinetic, neon-soaked, and genuinely tense, and it holds up on rewatch in a way that matters when you’re deciding whether to buy the disc.

This is where things get interesting. The release is pressed on a BD-100 — a triple-layer 100GB disc — which signals that the studio wasn’t cutting corners on the encode. BD-100 discs are uncommon enough that when you see one, it usually means they had room to give the encode serious breathing space in terms of bitrate, and that shows here. The Dolby Vision + HDR presentation is impressive throughout. The film leans heavily on neon lighting and deep shadow contrast, and both transfer cleanly without the kind of color banding or crush you’d see on a tighter encode. Highlights bloom the way they’re supposed to. The blacks hold up in dark scenes without blocking up. This is the kind of presentation that makes the BD-100 format choice make sense the moment you sit down with it.

Audio

The Dolby Atmos mix is a genuine highlight of this release. The film’s sound design uses overhead channels to place you inside the tournament environment — crowd noise above and around you, low-end rumble through the surrounds, discrete sound effects that move through the room with intention. It doesn’t feel like a gimmick track. The front stage handles dialogue cleanly and the LFE has real weight during the film’s action sequences. If you have the hardware for it, this is a mix worth showing off.
